During an interview with the Washington Post, former Chair of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele seemed to be confused as to how the Republican Party ended up with Donald Trump. It was a good thing the Washington bureau chief of Mother Jones, David Corn was on hand to sort out any confusion.
It started with this tweet by Jonathan Capehart.
Corn then jumped in with a few thoughts (and a timeline) to clear things up.
Others jumped in to share some thoughts on additional contributions.

For me one the most iconic moments was John Boehner in some interview saying it "it isn't for me to tell the American people what to think." They opened the door and invited in the crazy. They made the crazy comfortable. They nurtured them.
Your timeline shows the degradation of the GOP over 50 years. The GOP managed to scrape the bottom of the barrel in 2016 with the nomination of Donald Trump as their Presidential nominee.— GameDayAggie (@gamedayaggie) February 11, 2018
All the GOP operatives who participated in and orchestrated nefarious and deceitful campaigns over the past several decades and used lies and manipulation to elect Republican candidates, at any cost, are just as guilty.— Jackie Banyasz (@garwoodgal) February 11, 2018
Add Limbaughism in there i.e. the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine by the FCC in '87 that gave rise to rt wing talk radio.— RodRiehl (@getriehlman) February 11, 2018
I was 14 when Reagan made his Mississippi speech, & I remember thinking “Wow, are they really still that racist?”— Ethan Galant (@ethangalant) February 11, 2018
Aided and abetted by Rush, Hannity, Savage, Ingrham, and Beck well before the advent of Fox. It’s impossible to overstate the impact of right wing radio on the current state of affairs.— David Bicard (@ACDCABA) February 11, 2018
People were having a hard time believing Steele didn't see it coming.
@CapehartJ You don’t know what happened? 40+ years of obvious, out front, in your face, corruption and demonization of people in this country. Didn’t see it? Then, I’m sorry that you must have been dead for 40 years. That’s the only way you could have missed it. pic.twitter.com/CLILAWazyX— ✨T'Shetaar 🖖🏻 (@Tshetaar2017) February 11, 2018
Now that we all understand how we got here, how do we get out?
