Republican Cris Dush, a Pennsylvania state representative, is calling for the impeachment of five Democrats on the state Supreme Court after they ruled the state congressional map so heavily favored the GOP that it violated the state's constitution. The justices have given lawmakers until February 9 to present a new map to Gov. Tom Wolf (D), who will have until February 15 to approve it. If an agreement isn't reached by the deadline, the court will submit its own proposal for the redistricting, saying the new map could be expected by February 19.
Upset by the courts decision, Rep. Dush wrote a letter to Pennsylvania House members, saying:
The five Justices who signed this order that blatantly and clearly contradicts the plain language of the Pennsylvania Constitution, engaged in misbehavior in office. Wherefore, each is guilty of an impeachable offense warranting removal from office and disqualification to hold any office or trust or profit under this Commonwealth. I would ask you to please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
Faced with a Friday deadline to redraw congressional maps, Pennsylvania Republicans are instead insisting they'll continue to fight against the state Supreme Court -- with one lawmaker calling for five justices' impeachment https://t.co/ui1yubojyW pic.twitter.com/YbcTrw0HCt— CNN (@CNN) February 6, 2018
Many Twitter users were shocked by the audacity of Dush's proposal:
Ok. You there! Please impeach 5 Supremes. Okay now......all done!— Brenda Arvizu (@BrendaLArvizu) February 6, 2018
It's my ball. I let you play but it's mine. If you don't play by my rules I'm taking it and going home.— KSelk (@ecrire831) February 6, 2018
Some people chalked it up to business as usual with the GOP we've come to know:
Of course he wants the DEMS impeached.....give me a break.— MustVoteNow (@MWenrich1) February 6, 2018
Because the only way for the GOP to win is to cheat.— Matthew Verkamp (@MatthewVerkamp) February 6, 2018
Oh give it up and admit you’re wrong, fix the gerrymandered districts. Sheesh.— Janet Shannon (@JannnetShannnon) February 6, 2018
Yep another case proving the law & order party cares nothing for the actual law.— John Thomas (@jgthomas204) February 6, 2018
Hey, the GOP won't give up their corruption without a fight.— Scott Gibbs (@ScottNGibbs) February 6, 2018
Of course he does. Running for office without the ability to cheat really sucks.— Dee Kenny (@dkennycpd) February 6, 2018
Its almost like they don't want to stop their gerrymandering— Marie-M Rochette (@MarieMRochette1) February 6, 2018
But others believed it was a sign of the dangerous political times we're living in:
This is nearing the very definition of Banana Republic— Gus the Terror (@GusTheTerror) February 6, 2018
Our public servants no longer respect the rule of law. Robert Mugabe step aside.
This is what passes for statesmanship in the GOP in the era of Trump.— Cicero's Head (@ciceros_head) February 6, 2018
How do you impeach someone for telling the truth & trying to fix something that has been corrupt & unfair to a lot of tax paying citizens?— Jessie (@janey357) February 6, 2018
One Twitter user offered a suggestion on how the Pennsylvania GOP could make up for any lost districts:
dush represents the alleghany forest area, register the squirrels you nutklehead. gerrymander the woods.— shaz joyce (@shazjoyce42) February 6, 2018
