The FBI Is Investigating The Clinton Foundation—Because That's Important Right Now
Updated 5 months ago

Trump promised his fans that one of the things he'd do was prosecute Hillary Clinton.

On Tuesday he tweeted this impossibly convoluted message:

Crooked Hillary Clinton's top aid, Huma Abedin, has been accused of disregarding basic security protocols. She put Classified Passwords into the hands of foreign agents. Remember sailors picture on submarine? Jail! Deep State Justice Dept must finally act? Also on Comey & others.

A few days later, one FBI branch in Little Rock opened an investigation into the often-discussed emails and the Clinton Foundation, interviewing exactly one witness about possible policy favors in exchange for donations to the foundation.

There's a significant difference between being the subject of an investigation and being charged with a crime.

Here's Trump, desperate for some kind of win against his political opponents a full year after his electoral college victory, still wrapped up in attacking his enemies at a time when his campaign staff and allies are either turning against him or getting indicted and entering guilty pleas. And here's Hillary Clinton, who has already said she's not going to run for another political office. Authorities poked into he Clinton Foundation in 2016, but public corruption prosecutors in Washington expressed 'disinterest' in pursuing charges due to a lack of evidence. There are certainly a number of people and a number of robots calling for Clinton's head.

But even conservative politicos are turning up their noses at Trump's laser-like focus on the subject.

Clinton's chief spokesman Nick Merrill said Friday:

Let’s call this what it is: a sham. This is a philanthropy that does life-changing work, which Republicans have tried to turn into a political football. It began with a now long-debunked project spearheaded by Steve Bannon during the presidential campaign. It continues with Jeff Sessions doing Trump’s bidding by heeding his calls to meddle with a department that is supposed to function independently.

The investigation will look into whether or not donations to the Clinton foundation matched favorable decisions from the Obama administration during Clinton's time as secretary of state, which ended in 2013. Former FBI Director James Comey said in 2016 that Clinton was “extremely careless” in her handling of confidential information on a private email server and said there was some evidence of legal violations, but he "declined to recommend" charges because he could not prove Clinton and her aides intended to break the law.

Reactions on Twitter were mixed, as you'd imagine:

Meanwhile, the boa constrictor that is Robert Mueller continues to squeeze.
