Beginning Monday transgender people are allowed to enlist in the U.S. military. The ruling was ordered by two federal courts, and the current administration, as of now, is not appealing the overturning of a directive by Donald Trump to ban transgender individuals from serving in the armed forces.
Heather Babb, a Pentagon spokeswoman said:
“As mandated by court order, the Department of Defense is prepared to begin accessing transgender applicants for military service Jan. 1. All applicants must meet all accession standards.”
Shannon Minter, legal director at the National Center for Lesbian Rights said about the decision:
“This is a major victory in the litigation and great news for transgender troops, transgender military academy and ROTC students, and transgender people who have been waiting to enlist. There is no reason to exclude transgender people from military service, especially when they have already proved their ability to serve."
The news of the ruling quickly hit social media.
Donald Trump started this whole mess with a series of tweets this summer.
After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow......— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2017

....victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2017
People were angry with Trump for wasting valuable resources.
So, his tweet last summer accomplished nothing but angst and confusion among soldiers, DoD, and the American public. Will he offer an explanation? An apology? Any statement at all? Certainly not, bc he's never wrong.— Linda (@LindaKMcP) January 1, 2018
How much time/money was wasted because the president had a temper tantrum.— NotInvisibleUSA (@indivisible_usa) December 30, 2017
how much taxpayer funded resources were wasted on yet another Trump 'unconstitutional' endeavor??— KSwa50 (@noybsk2017) December 30, 2017
People are putting their faith in the American legal system rather than the president.
Thank God for the courts of this great nation. This is proof that we must stand w/ our institutions. As a country we will never follow the path of North Korea, Russian, Iran in allowing dictatorship as a way of life. Today, the court upheld democracy & justice. God bless America— D. H. Other people questioned Trumps motives for sending the tweets in the first place.
Not surprised he probably didn't even care about trans in the military just wanted to make his followers happy and say that he tried. Most likely his plan all along.— Tatiana ☠ (@LilyValley93) December 30, 2017
So all that posturing and bloviation was for nothing. He just did that to get people off the Russia story.— 🙅🏿♂️Mr. Me Too🙅🏿♂️ (@grime_optimus) December 30, 2017
