Kellyanne Conway Tries To Change Subject To Benghazi When Grilled About Donald Jr.’s Russia Meeting
9 months ago

Kellyanne Conway found herself in a tight spot early Sunday after George Stephanopoulos, the host of ABC's "This Week," took her to task for President Donald Trump's role in crafting a misleading statement about Donald Trump Jr.'s role in a meeting with a Russian attorney.

Stephanopoulos said the White House and Trump's admins had given conflicting statements about the president's involvement. Donald Trump Jr. revealed last month that he met with a Russian lawyer during the presidential campaign. An intermediary for the lawyer promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton, the Democratic opponent. Trump Jr.’s emails contradict months of denials by the Trump administration of any collusion with Russian operatives.

"Let's talk about telling the truth," Conway said. "Let's talk about a president looking Americans in the eye, who are still suffering eight years later, who were lied to. If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor."

She continued: "Benghazi happened because of a video. Go tell the families of those four innocent Americans who were slaughtered in Benghazi that that lie mattered."

Conway insisted she was not deflecting from the Russia probe. She claimed that she was merely referring to "credibility that impacts people...those were big lies".

The response was not particularly kind.

During the same appearance, Conway admitted that the president has experienced a dip in Republican support. A Quinnipiac University poll released last week places the president's approval rating at a paltry 33 percent.

His approval rating among Republicans and conservatives and Trump voters is down slightly. It needs to go up. They are telling him just enact your program. Don’t worry about a Congress that isn’t supporting legislation to get big-ticket items done. And don’t worry about all the distractions and diversions and discouragement that others, who are trying to throw logs in your path, are throwing your way,” she said. “Focus on the agenda. And he’s doing that.”
